MP Jayne Kihara, who referred to Ruto as 'mad,' has been summoned by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over alleged comments considered detrimental to the respect commanded by a certain public official.

A notice from Assistant Inspector General George Lenny Kisaka has instructed Kihara to report to DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road in Nairobi on Monday, July 14, at 10:30 am. READ MORE

The summons, delivered on Friday, follows the agency's inquiry into the purported spread of “inciteful or disruptive content,” which is believed to violate Section 132 of the Penal Code that penalizes undermining a public officer’s authority.

“I hereby order you, Hon. Jayne Njeri Wanjiku Kihara, MP for Naivasha Constituency… to present yourself before me… without fail,” the notice that the MP shared on Sunday states partially.

“Not adhering to this request amounts to an offense that could lead to prosecution.”

Kihara, who is a strong supporter of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has been a pointed critic of President William Ruto’s administration.

She recently labeled the President as “mad” for directing police to immobilize violent protesters by targeting their legs with gunfire.

In response to the summons, Kihara described the action as political persecution designed to silence government critics.

“The era of using the criminal justice system to intimidate leaders has ended. Summoning me to DCI headquarters tomorrow will not alter Kenyans' determination, as this is not solely about Jayne Kihara but rather about our nation, Kenya,” she wrote on Facebook.

Her remarks come amid increased political unrest following the recent Saba Saba Day protests, which took place weeks after the June 25 commemoration of the Gen Z-led anti-tax movements of 2024.
