A 22-year-old man, Stephen M. McMillan, was killed in a shootout over the weekend in Osage County, Kansas, after allegedly opening fire on law enforcement officers responding to a domestic disturbance call at his family’s rural farmhouse. The violent confrontation left four officers injured, and McMillan’s 77-year-old grandfather was also hospitalized.

According to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the shooting occurred Saturday morning near Carbondale, about 16 miles south of Topeka, when deputies from the Osage County Sheriff’s Department and a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper arrived at the scene. McMillan reportedly fired at the officers, prompting them to return fire, killing him.

Two of the deputies required surgery at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka and are now in good condition. The third deputy was released, and the injured highway patrol trooper, initially treated at Stormont-Vail and later transferred to the University of Kansas Medical Center, has also been released. McMillan’s grandfather, who was also shot during the incident, is expected to survive.
