A tragic incident in northwest Houston has left a community grieving after Riley Dearmas, a 13-year-old girl, died from a stabbing during a large disturbance outside an apartment complex Wednesday night.

According to the Houston Police Department, officers responded around 8 p.m. to reports of a fight involving 20 to 30 people near the intersection of Grow Lane and Dow Road. When officers arrived, they found Riley suffering from at least one stab wound. She was rushed to the hospital, where she later died.

Authorities said they spoke with an adult woman and a 10-year-old boy, who admitted to stabbing Riley and turned himself over to police. Investigators stated the child claimed self-defense, alleging that Riley was part of a group that came to the apartment and began assaulting people inside. Under Texas law, 10 years old is the minimum age of criminal responsibility.

The 10-year-old was detained Wednesday night but later released pending further investigation. Police say they are continuing to interview witnesses, review surveillance footage, and will forward all findings to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for a charging decision.

However, Riley’s family strongly disputes the narrative that has circulated publicly. Her aunt, Danielle White, said Riley was not bullying the child, was not the aggressor, and should not be blamed for her own death.

“My niece was not bullying a 10-year-old. She didn’t even come to fight and wasn’t even fighting him,” White said. “The truth will come out, and justice will be served.”

Investigators believe the incident may have stemmed from a school-related altercation earlier that day at a Cy-Fair ISD middle school. Cy-Fair ISD confirmed Riley was a student at Dean Middle School and said counseling services are being provided to students, staff, and families.

As the investigation continues, Riley’s loved ones are calling for the public to avoid speculation and allow authorities to conduct a full and transparent review of the case.
