Just hours later, on the night of July 6, the couple was brutally murdered.

David’s body was discovered at the entrance. Deborah’s was located in the bathroom. The housemaid was the one who found the bodies. Neighbors reported hearing unusual sounds that evening.

Authorities indicated that there were signs of forced entry. CCTV footage captured intruders climbing over the wall and later exiting through the main gate. Investigators also uncovered a broken window and a disturbed roof. The assailants are thought to have used sharp weapons. Two casual workers from the household were taken in for questioning. Some speculate that the attack was premeditated. It could be linked to land or inheritance disputes. David was the rightful heir to their ancestral land and had prevented some relatives from selling it. Some of those relatives were struggling financially and desired money.

The couple’s children, Isabel Najitta and Mark Ernest Kabenge, reside abroad. They did not return to Uganda for the memorial or burial due to concerns for their safety. They feared that the same individuals responsible for their parents' deaths might pose a threat to them as well. During the service, they shared heartfelt tributes via video call, expressing that their parents sought only peace. They also hinted that a close relative may have played a role in the murders.

The memorial took place at All Saints Cathedral in Kampala. Because the police investigation was ongoing, the couple’s bodies had not yet been released for burial. The service proceeded without coffins. Instead, two large portraits were featured at the front of the church, surrounded by flowers. The event was broadcast live on television. Candles were lit as mourners wept and prayed for justice.

The Mutaaga-Nabeta family later issued a statement confirming the deaths and requesting privacy. They indicated that the police were still investigating and urged people not to spread rumors or make hasty conclusions.

The Mutaagas had envisioned enjoying their later years at home, giving back to the community, and cherishing time with family. However, their lives were taken in a tragic and heartbreaking manner. The investigation continues, and their children are still seeking justice.
