Lucy saw blood on her daughter's hands, and as she reached for her, Bridgit collapsed. It was at that moment she noticed the head injury and realized her daughter had been shot. The bullet had penetrated the metal walls of their home, fired as police were trying to disperse the protesters outside.
A post-mortem examination confirmed that Bridgit succumbed to a gunshot wound. The bullet was recovered and handed over to the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA), which is currently investigating her case.
Lucy Ngugi was overwhelmed with sorrow during the service and required support from her husband and two women as she broke down crying.
“Father, in the mighty name of Jesus, as we proceed to the burial, I ask for Your peace. Let us leave all the tears here,” prayed Lucy Ngugi.
“As we return to church, we will celebrate a life well-lived by my precious daughter. Wipe away our tears, oh Lord. I will no longer cry, and from this point on, it is well,”
The funeral saw the presence of several political figures, including Kalonzo Musyoka, Fred Matiang’i, and Eugene Wamalwa. They joined with the mourners in advocating for the cessation of police violence and the need for better protection for innocent civilians, particularly children.
Bridgit’s father also spoke during the service, calling on the government to take accountability. “We understand that we cannot bring our daughter back, but we want to ensure that no other family endures this suffering,” he remarked.
As they lowered her small white casket into the earth, the community of Ndumberi stood united in grief, anger, and resolve to ensure that her death will not be forgotten.
