James Black, the Principal at Mt. Blue Middle School in Farmington, Maine, is facing widespread criticism after photos surfaced of him dressed as an ICE agent for Halloween.
According to reports reaching our newsroom, Black’s choice of costume quickly drew backlash from community members and social media users who called it insensitive and inappropriate, especially considering how deeply immigration issues impact many students and families.
One viral post read:
“So James Black, the Mt. Blue Middle School principal in Farmington, Maine, chose to dress up as an ICE agent for Halloween? IDC how y’all try to spin it, a principal dressing up as an ICE agent is sick. That’s not a costume — that’s real trauma for immigrant kids. Imagine walking into school and your educator thinks deportation is a joke. Like… read the room, bro. I’m disgusted.”
Critics argue that dressing as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer trivializes the real fear and trauma experienced by immigrant students, especially those with families affected by deportation or immigration raids.
As of now, the school district has not released an official statement regarding the incident, and it’s unclear whether any disciplinary action will be taken.
Meanwhile, other celebrities and public figures showcased much lighter themes for Halloween 2025. Scotty McCreery and his family went prehistoric with their Jurassic Park-inspired costumes, featuring his sons Avery and Oliver dressed as adorable dinosaurs.
Country star Thomas Rhett and his family once again impressed fans with their Despicable Me / Minions group costume, with Rhett hilariously playing Gru. Kelsea Ballerini also channeled Gru, while her dog Dibs stole hearts as an adorable Minion.
While some Halloween costumes this year sparked laughter and family fun, others — like James Black’s controversial choice — have reignited conversations about sensitivity, leadership, and cultural awareness in schools and public institutions.
