An Arizona father, who admitted to killing his 2-year-old daughter after leaving her in a sweltering car while he drank beer, played video games, and watched pornography, was found dead on the day he was scheduled to be sentenced.
Christopher Scholtes, 38, was discovered deceased at a residence in the Phoenix area early Wednesday morning, according to the Maricopa County Medical Examiner’s Office. Authorities confirmed that Scholtes took his own life just hours before his scheduled court appearance.
Scheduled to Face 20–30 Years in Prison
Scholtes was set to be sentenced to between 20 and 30 years in prison without parole after admitting to second-degree murder and child abuse in connection with the death of his daughter, Parker Scholtes.

An autopsy will be performed, though results are not expected until early 2026.

Hot Car Death That Shocked Arizona
The case dates back to July 2024, when two-year-old Parker was found dead inside the family’s driveway in Marana, near Tucson. On that scorching afternoon, temperatures reached 109°F.
Investigators determined that Scholtes had left his daughter asleep in the back seat of the family’s Acura while the air conditioning was running. He then went inside to drink beer, play video games, and watch adult movies for several hours. When the car’s air conditioning shut off automatically — something he admitted to knowing would happen after about 30 minutes — the toddler died in the searing heat.
When Parker was rushed to Banner University Medical Center, where her mother Dr. Erika Scholtes, 37, worked as an anesthesiologist, it was too late. The child was pronounced dead less than an hour after arrival.
Pattern of Neglect and Abuse
Court records and police reports revealed that Scholtes had a long history of reckless behavior, alcohol abuse, and child neglect. His two older children — then aged nine and five — told investigators their father often left them and Parker unattended in the car while he played games or drank inside.

“I told you to stop leaving them in the car, how many times have I told you?”
After realizing what had happened, Christopher responded:
“Babe, I’m sorry! How could I do this? I killed our baby. This can’t be real.”
The couple’s 17-year-old daughter has since filed a civil lawsuit against both parents, alleging emotional distress, assault, battery, and fraud dating back to when she was a child.
Reports also indicate that Scholtes previously lost custody of an older daughter from another relationship after accusations of physical abuse and neglect. Witnesses said he would leave the children in hot cars long enough for the air conditioning to shut off — a situation only avoided when the eldest child learned how to restart the vehicle herself.

A Tragic End Before Justice
After rejecting an earlier plea deal for 10 years in prison, Scholtes ultimately accepted a harsher agreement in October, pleading guilty to second-degree murder and child abuse. He had been out on bail and living in the Phoenix suburbs ahead of his sentencing.
His wife, Dr. Erika Scholtes, purchased a $1.025 million home in April and continued to insist in court that Parker’s death was a tragic mistake rather than murder.
But as his sentencing date approached, Christopher Scholtes ended his life — leaving behind unanswered questions, grieving children, and a community still trying to comprehend the devastating loss of little Parker Scholtes.
