A Texas A&M University student from Hereford, Texas, has died days after suffering life-threatening injuries in a devastating car crash, according to her family.
Avery Detten passed away on May 26 after remaining hospitalized in intensive care for several days following a serious automobile accident on May 21. Family members said Avery sustained a traumatic brain injury, a collapsed lung, a fractured pelvis and multiple additional fractures in the crash and was being treated at Northwest Texas Hospital in Amarillo.
According to updates shared by her family throughout her hospitalization, Avery was initially listed in critical but stable condition as doctors fought to reduce severe brain swelling and manage elevated intracranial pressure. She was placed into a medically induced coma, put on a ventilator and heavily sedated while physicians attempted various treatments to stabilize her condition and protect her brain function.
Her mother, Jessica Detten, later confirmed Avery’s passing in an emotional statement, writing that her daughter had “left this earthly life.” She also revealed that Avery became an organ donor, describing it as her “last earthly gift,” with the potential to help as many as 65 people.Friends, classmates and loved ones have since flooded social media with tributes remembering Avery for her kindness, compassion and uplifting personality. Those who knew her described her as someone whose warmth and optimism left a lasting impression on everyone around her.
As a student at Texas A&M University, Avery was recognized for her dedication to academics, involvement in campus life and passion for helping others. Family members said she embraced every opportunity with determination and positivity while proudly representing her hometown of Hereford, Texas.
Loved ones say Avery’s passing has left an enormous void throughout both the Hereford community and the Texas A&M student body. Community members continue rallying around the Detten family as they mourn the loss of a young woman remembered for her generosity, resilience and bright future.
