A California hotel employee was fired after videos showing him confronting an Israeli couple during a hotel check-in went viral online, sparking widespread debate on social media over workplace conduct, political expression, and antisemitism.
The employee, identified as 24-year-old Ryan Smith, was terminated from his position at Oceanpoint Ranch in Cambria following the incident, which was recorded and shared across Instagram and other social media platforms.
In the video, Smith can be heard telling the couple “Free Palestine” as they approached the check-in counter. The woman responded by telling him he should remain “completely objective” toward hotel guests.
“You should be embarrassed of yourself,” the woman said in the footage.
Smith then replied, “All I said was ‘Free Palestine,’” before stating that he believed “Israel is a Zionist state.” The woman responded by saying that she herself was a Zionist.
As the exchange continued, Smith repeatedly referred to the woman as a Zionist while filming the interaction on his phone.
At one point in the video, Smith can also be heard asking the couple, “Are you a baby killer?” and questioning whether either of them had served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The male guest responded by telling Smith that the confrontation was “a game,” while the couple later appeared to speak privately to each other in Hebrew.
Online claims later circulated alleging the woman expressed fear that the employee could potentially enter their room, though that allegation has not been independently confirmed by verified sources.
The confrontation quickly drew national attention online, with many viewers criticizing the employee’s behavior and arguing that political disputes should not be introduced into professional hospitality settings.
“Absolutely disgusting behavior. I hope he’s fired and that the hotel issues an apology,” one social media user wrote.
Others questioned why political tensions tied to the Middle East were being brought into interactions with hotel guests in the United States.
However, some online commenters defended Smith, arguing he was expressing political beliefs related to the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict.
Oceanpoint Ranch later confirmed Smith had been terminated following the incident.
Hotel general manager Angel Gonzalez told the New York Post that the employee’s actions “do not align with the standards of respect and hospitality” expected at the hotel.
The hotel also reportedly issued an apology following the viral controversy.
Following his termination, Smith launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “Support Ryan’s Stand for Justice,” where he claimed he lost his job for “speaking up on the genocide and ethnic cleansing ongoing within the Middle East.”
The fundraiser reportedly collected more than $10,000 within days.
The incident also drew reactions from advocacy organizations and public figures. Leo Terrell, chair of the Department of Justice’s antisemitism task force, described the incident as “outrageous” and called for additional review beyond Smith’s firing.
Israeli author Hen Mazzig also shared the footage online, writing, “This is what 2026 looks like for Jews.”
The viral incident has fueled broader online discussions surrounding political speech in workplaces, customer treatment in the hospitality industry, and rising tensions connected to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
