Walter Earnest Birdsong Jr. and Amanda Lynn Birdsong Killed by Relative in Mississippi Murder-Suicide Over Land Dispute

A Mississippi gunmaker and his wife were shot dead by a relative over a long-standing land dispute before the gunman took his own life following a police standoff. Authorities identified the victims as Walter Earnest Birdsong Jr., 62, and his wife, Amanda Lynn Birdsong, 43. The couple was killed inside their Florence home on Friday afternoon by Walter’s brother, 56-year-old Kurt Tyler Birdsong.

The fatal shooting was the result of a decade-long conflict over family land in Rankin County. Kurt Birdsong claimed he was entitled to a 14-acre plot of land promised to him by his late father, who passed away in 2015. However, court documents show a judge ruled against Kurt in 2019 because there was no written contract. Neighbors noted that Kurt became increasingly erratic after the legal loss, with reports of late-night yelling and family arguments. Amanda Birdsong reportedly acted as a mediator during these disputes, often trying to get the family to sit down and talk.

On the day of the incident, Kurt stormed into the couple’s home on the 1400 block of Monterey Road armed with at least two guns and shot them multiple times. After a 911 caller reported the shooting, Rankin County deputies arrived within eight minutes. Kurt barricaded himself in a bathroom, leading to a three-hour standoff with SWAT teams and hostage negotiators. Because Walter was the son of the founder of W.E. Birdsong & Associates, a firearms coating and manufacturing business, Sheriff Bryan Bailey requested bomb squad assistance due to concerns about explosive materials on the property.

The standoff ended when authorities used armored equipment to breach the home. They found Kurt Birdsong deceased inside the bathroom from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Rankin County Sheriff’s Office is continuing the investigation with assistance from the FBI and ATF, and investigators are currently searching Kurt’s cellphone for a potential manifesto.

The Birdsong family released a statement expressing that they are "heartbroken beyond words." They asked for respect as they bury Walter, Amanda, and Kurt, stating that the land meant for the family ultimately tore them apart.
