OYE-EKITI, NIGERIA — The management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) in Ekiti State has suspended the President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), James Iyanuoluwa Adio, along with two senior university officials over their alleged involvement in the extortion of 100-level students.
The suspension was announced in an official statement issued by FUOYE Registrar Mufutau Ibrahim. According to the university, the disciplinary action follows a petition alleging that fresh students were compelled to pay an unapproved N1,000 levy, purportedly for practical sessions.
A preliminary fact-finding committee set up by the university management uncovered that the funds were collected without the authorization of the university Senate or management. The SUG President was directly implicated in the financial misconduct after investigations linked his personal bank account to a transfer of N700,000 originating from the unauthorized collections.
The two senior officials suspended alongside Adio are:
Olanrewaju Ogunjobi, Director of the Directorate of Educational Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Banji Rildwan Olaleye, Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Support Services
Registrar Ibrahim reiterated that the school has a zero-tolerance stance on corruption, emphasizing that all legitimate university payments must be handled strictly through the institution's bursary.
Leaked Video Scandal Deepens Crisis
Compounding the suspension, the embattled student leader, who is a student in the Department of Computer Science, has become the center of a separate scandal. On Wednesday night, an explicit video allegedly involving Adio began circulating heavily across social media platforms.
Reports indicate the footage was recorded by a female companion, who is also a student at the university. Unconfirmed reports circulating online suggest that the female student responsible for making and leaking the recording has been detained by authorities, though official validation from law enforcement is still pending.
The combination of the financial extortion probe and the leaked footage has sparked intense debate across online student communities, with many calling for stricter leadership and moral standards within student governance. Neither Adio nor the university management has released an official statement regarding the social media video.
