Chris Aguilar, a Maryvale High School student in Phoenix, Arizona, stabs his classmate Michael Montaya II to death over a gun deal gone wrong

According to new court filings, an alleged robbery involving two Ohio youths led to one of the guys seeking revenge on the other by reportedly stabbing his fellow classmate to death at Maryvale High School.

Chris Aguilar, 16, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Michael Montoya II, who was also 16 earlier this week.

Montaya was stabbed in a classroom shortly before 11 a.m. on Tuesday, one day after the alleged gun-related crime. When authorities arrived, they discovered Montoya severely injured with many stab wounds. He was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he eventually died.

According to court filings, Aguilar was allegedly carrying a folding 4-inch pocketknife on campus. Following the stabbing, Aguilar reportedly fled the classroom and dropped the knife, but was later apprehended by a school safety officer.

According to court documents published by AZFamily, many witnesses stated that the two teenagers met the day before the stabbing and Montoya robbed Aguilar of a weapon. Investigators added that Aguilar and his twin brother'made statements to murder the victim following the crime,' according to one witness.

A screenshot uploaded on social media suggested that the stabbing occurred as a result of a failed 'transaction'.

’So yesterday Michael (the victim) and Chris (the stabber) they met up to deal and Michael ends up robbing him, his gun so Chris gets mad asf he gets on ft w his friend and his twin and was like mad asf telling them he was gonna kill him and obv they don’t take it seriously but then yk everything went down, basically it was intentional from the start.’

Teachers and students were interviewed by police. Two teachers said that Aguilar ‘was the aggressor and Montoya was not able to defend himself,’ court documents stated.

Aguilar was seen repeatedly hitting Montaya on film when they looked to be lying on the ground. At no point was there an attempt to break up the brawl or get the boy with the weapon to quit.

Following the incident, both boys were taken to the hospital, where Montaya died from his injuries and Aguilar suffered minor injuries.

Aguilar was freed from the hospital and sent to the police headquarters. With his parents there, he declined to speak with authorities and demanded an attorney.

He was booked into jail for second-degree murder. His cash-only bond was set at $500,000.

The school will remain closed for the rest of the week, as students will continue with remote learning on Thursday and Friday.

A vigil is set to take place at the high school on Friday evening as families are left in shock, mourning the loss of a student.
