The tragic incident occurred around 05:30 hours . Preliminary investigations by the Police indicate that Detective Chief Inspector Funkuta Muyembi aged 46, stationed at Solwezi District Police Intelligence Office, used a government-issued firearm to commit the act.

According to the official police report, the officer signed out an AK-47 rifle from the Inquiries Office at 05:05 hours, claiming he was following up on a report in Mutanda. However, instead of proceeding on duty, he reportedly used a spare key to access the house where his wife was staying following a recent separation.

Inside, an argument is believed to have erupted. Muyembi is then alleged to have fatally shot his wife, Womba Samulozela aged 41 and her brother, Dr. Wana Samulozela aged 42 who had recently transferred to Solwezi from Lusaka and was working with the Provincial Health Office. He later turned the weapon on himself.
