Altercation at Tulsa QuickTrip gas station leads to Justin Mattingly shot dead, with authorities releasing suspect shooter after questioning

An fight in the parking lot of a Tulsa gas station turned fatal on Sunday night, killing a 36-year-old Oklahoma man.

Officers from the Tulsa Police Department responded to the QuikTrip petrol station, located at 220 N. Gilcrease Museum Road, just before 11.20 p.m. on Sunday night.

Upon arrival, they located Justin Mattingly with a gunshot wound to the head.

Despite efforts to save his life, Mattingly died at the scene from his injuries.

According to investigators, the shooting was the result of an incident between Mattingly and another man, as reported by News9.

Detectives investigated surveillance video and discovered that the dispute began inside the convenience shop, where the suspect assaulted Mattingly, who responded with verbal threats.

Despite lifesaving efforts, Mattingly succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

According to investigators, the shooting stemmed from an altercation between Mattingly and another man, News9 reported.

Surveillance video reviewed by detectives showed the dispute beginning inside the convenience store, where the suspect was seen assaulting Mattingly, who in turn made verbal threats.

The dispute eventually spilled onto the parking lot. Shortly after the initial incident, Mattingly and a buddy, both on motorbikes, approached the suspect's vehicle at a petrol pump.

According to detectives, Mattingly kicked the suspect's car door before riding away.

The culprit, still sat in his truck, fired a single shot, striking Mattingly in the head.

Investigators earlier stated that the suspect did not flee and was apprehended without incident. They stated that the individual who fired the gun was questioned but later freed. He is not currently under arrest.

Officers say all investigative findings will be forwarded to the Tulsa County District Attorney's Office, which will decide whether to press charges.
