A repeat offender driver in Florida is accused of running over a single mother and dragging her body on his windshield for an additional 8 blocks before sliding off.
Kjersten Aileen-Hermance Strang, 38, was riding her e-bike down 49th Street South in Gulfport around 10 p.m. on Saturday when Xavier Omar Rigby, 22, crashed into her, flinging her onto the hood of his Nissan Altima.
Rigby was riding at a 'high rate of speed' when he collided with the rear of Strang's bike.
Rigby, who has a history of traffic infractions, including DUI, did not call for aid and instead fled, leaving Strang to die alone on the roadside.
Strang, who lived in nearby St. Petersburg was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office quickly identified the suspect’s vehicle and a short time later, Rigby was found at a liquor store just a mile from the scene.
Police said they could smell alcohol on his breath, and noted his bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and unsteady gait.
Rigby refused field sobriety tests and was arrested.
Rigby was charged with DUI manslaughter, vehicular homicide, and leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
During his first court appearance on Monday, Judge Elizabeth Zuroweste chastised the 'problem driver,' emphasizing Rigby's criminal history and role in the fatal incident, according to Fox 13.
'I'm finding that you're a risk to the community, and that nothing else can secure your decision-making and placing your and everyone else's lives on the road,' Judge Zuroweste spoke.
'Here you are with a prior fleeing the scene from 2022, then in 2024, the state was gracious enough to decrease your DUI to a reckless, but for bond reasons, it is a DUI. So, here we are today,' she remarked, highlighting his record.
‘We’ve now gone to a second DUI, but this time the extremely aggravating facts where you’ve killed somebody, left the scene and dragged their body. And I don’t need to go any further for how aggravating this set of facts are,’ said Judge Zuroweste.
According to court documents, Rigby has a history of driving recklessly.
In 2022, he was engaged in another hit-and-run, and in 2023, he was charged with DUI after confessing to drinking and consuming marijuana before getting behind the wheel.
In 2024, the charge was reduced to careless driving through a plea agreement.
'This was not his first time harming people on the road,' the court stated. 'But this time, his irresponsibility resulted in a preventable catastrophe.'
A GoFundMe page created to help her family hailed Strang as a 'angel' and one of the most kind persons in the town.
Social media posts showed Strang to be a devoted single mom.
