Tragedy struck near Ben Lomond High School in Ogden, Utah, on Tuesday afternoon, when 16-year-old student Mason Caballero was shot and killed shortly after classes had ended for the day.
According to Ogden Police Capt. Tim Scott, the fatal shooting occurred approximately 10 to 15 minutes after school was dismissed. Investigators said Caballero ran toward the school campus seeking help, where a school safety officer and staff members immediately attempted life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, Caballero succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The Ogden School District confirmed the shooting took place in the area of 5th Street and Gramercy Avenue, near the school grounds. Authorities stressed that the incident is not connected to the hoax bomb threat reported at the school the previous week.
Caballero’s family identified him publicly, describing the teen as a “funny young man with the biggest heart.” His cousin, Adayla Gama, said the family is devastated, sharing that his grandparents, parents, and siblings are “grieving the loss of someone whose heart was the heart of the family.”
“Mason’s kindness, willingness to help, and ability to make others smile will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him,” Gama said.
In an emotional family statement, they added:
“Mason took his last breath on his big brother’s birthday after tragically being shot near Ben Lomond High School. No amount of help can bring him back, but any support is appreciated. Mase was the sweetest boy you could think of — so funny and outgoing. Please keep our family in your prayers.”
Police said no suspects have been identified or arrested as of now. Investigators are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
The recent tragedy follows a series of distressing incidents at Ben Lomond High School. On October 2, the school was placed on lockdown after a hoax bomb threat was called into 911 around 8:30 a.m. Officers cleared the building after an extensive sweep, confirming there was no danger. A juvenile suspect from Washington State was later detained in connection with that threat.Reflecting on the recent events, Ogden School District Superintendent Luke Rasmussen said:
“I really feel for this school right now; they have had an unfortunate run of events.”
Authorities continue to investigate the motive and circumstances surrounding Mason Caballero’s death, while the community mourns the loss of a young life taken far too soon.
