A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the small town of Pima, Arizona, after authorities say 31-year-old Justice Jones and her two children, 8-year-old Tyme Oates and 9-year-old Kyle Oates, were found dead in what investigators believe was a murder-suicide earlier this month.
Police responded to a home in Pima on October 16, where they discovered the bodies of Justice, her children, and her father, Duane Jones, according to reports from AZ Family and The Gila Herald. Investigators believe Duane fatally shot his daughter and grandchildren before turning the gun on himself. All four victims died from gunshot wounds, and the firearm was found in Duane’s possession.
The night before the tragedy, Justice made what relatives now describe as a chilling post on Facebook. She simply wrote “Good night” with a slanted-face emoji — something her family later found deeply unsettling.
“She put a post on Facebook and just said ‘good night’ with the weird slant emoji, so it was evident that something was going on,” said Breana Flores, a relative, in an interview with AZ Family.
Flores said she hopes the victims didn’t suffer:
“I just hope that all of them... I hope they were asleep and no one had to see anything happen or experience any type of fear before it happened.”
According to family members, there had been no signs that Duane Jones was struggling with mental health issues or distress. The unexpected act of violence has left relatives and the entire Pima community devastated, mourning the loss of three generations from one family.
In the wake of the tragedy, two GoFundMe fundraisers have been created to honor the victims and support the surviving family. One, organized by Phillip Oates, describes Tyme and Kyle as “beautiful children full of light, laughter, and love.” The campaign reads, “They deserved to grow up, chase dreams, and feel safe.” Donations will help cover memorial and funeral costs.
A second fundraiser, created by Breana Flores, supports the children’s father, identified as Phil, as he takes time off work and travels out of state to make funeral arrangements.
The small Arizona town of Pima continues to grieve the devastating loss of Justice Jones, Tyme Oates, and Kyle Oates — a mother and her children remembered for their warmth and love. What began as a simple Facebook post saying “Good night” has become a haunting final message before an unimaginable tragedy.
