Daniel Cabreja Killed by Cartels in Mexico After Failing to Pay $100K Ransom

A Dominican man, Daniel Cabreja, originally from Monte Plata province, met a harrowing end in Mexico after being held hostage for nearly two months by cartel members.

According to relatives, Cabreja was abducted and his captors demanded $100,000 in exchange for his release. When the ransom was not paid, the kidnappers carried out a gruesome punishment. He was allegedly forced to dig his own grave before being executed with a gunshot.

Family members said they were unable to raise the large sum demanded by the cartel, despite desperate pleas and attempts to negotiate. “They demanded money we could never raise. Now Daniel is gone,” one relative said.

Authorities in Mexico confirmed that the Dominican national had been killed, while relatives back home are now appealing for help in repatriating his body so he can receive a proper burial.

The murder highlights the growing dangers of cartel kidnappings in Mexico, where locals and foreigners alike are targeted for ransom. Experts note that cases such as Cabreja’s are becoming increasingly common, with families abroad pressured into sending money under threat of violence.

His death has sparked outrage and grief in both the Dominican Republic and the migrant community, serving as a grim reminder of the merciless reach of organized crime.
