Washington, IA – A tragic hunting accident claimed the life of a Washington High School student over the weekend after he was mistakenly identified as game by a member of his own hunting party.
Carson Ryan, a teenager from Washington, Iowa, was shot in the back of the head Saturday afternoon while squirrel hunting in rural Brighton. He was airlifted to the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center, where he later died, according to the Des Moines Register.
Mistaken Identity Leads to Fatal Shooting
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reported that Ryan had been “mistaken for a squirrel by a member of his hunting group” at the time of the incident. Officials emphasized that the shooting appeared accidental and said no criminal charges are expected to be filed, though the investigation remains ongoing.

News of Carson’s death has devastated the Washington community, where he was known as a student-athlete and active participant in school events. Friends, family, and teammates quickly took to social media to share tributes and memories.

Ryan was also a member of his high school’s homecoming court this year. The tragedy struck just as Washington High School was preparing to celebrate homecoming week.
