Outrage as Polk County Teacher Sings “Zoo Monkey” Birthday Song to Black Student
Reports emerging from Polk County indicate that a teacher, Kimberly Langston of Floral Avenue Elementary School, has come under heavy criticism after being filmed singing a “zoo monkey” rendition of the Happy Birthday song to a young Black student.
While the song may have been intended as a playful gesture, many in the community argue it carried deeply offensive undertones. The video shows children laughing, but concern has been raised over how such actions could affect the targeted child.
Critics point out that equating a Black child to a monkey is not a harmless joke but a perpetuation of racist stereotypes. Historically, during the colonial era of the 19th and 20th centuries, Black men, women, and children were displayed in so-called “human zoos” across Europe and the United States. These dehumanizing exhibitions were designed to promote colonial dominance and reinforce false notions of racial superiority.
Community members are demanding accountability, stressing that teachers should be especially mindful of the weight their words and actions carry in diverse classrooms.
“This isn’t just a song—it’s a reminder of how white supremacy continues to be normalized because Black children are made to endure it in silence,” one parent wrote online.
The incident has sparked calls for Polk County Public Schools to investigate and ensure such conduct is not tolerated in the classroom. Supporters have also rallied behind the student’s family, urging justice and greater protection for Black children in school environments.
