Krystal Hurd, Former Sanibel Camp Counselor, Arrested in Florida for Sexually Abusing Multiple Children for Years

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. — A former Florida camp counselor, Krystal Hurd, 42, has been arrested and charged with sexually abusing multiple children over a period of several years — including two minors who lived in her home with her then-husband, according to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators allege that Hurd, who worked at the Sanibel Recreation Center between 2005 and 2009, engaged in inappropriate and criminal sexual behavior involving one boy and three girls between 2008 and 2014.

Authorities say Hurd met the victims while serving as a counselor at the recreation center, where she spent “vast amounts of time” with children and allegedly singled out a small group for special treatment and privileges. Detectives believe she targeted children whose parents “weren’t highly involved in their lives,” giving her greater access and control.

Allegations of Years-Long Abuse

According to investigators, Hurd’s sexual relationship with one of the victims — a 12-year-old boy at the time — continued for years, lasting until he turned 19. Detectives said Hurd even told the boy that they would “be together and get married” once he turned 18.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office reports that Hurd also allegedly forced one of the female victims to engage in a sexual act with the same boy while she watched. Two of the four victims reportedly lived with Hurd and her husband during part of the abuse.

Court documents indicate that Hurd later confessed to her then-husband that she had sexual relations with one of the victims after the now-adult victim confronted her about the abuse.

Investigation and Arrest

The investigation began in 2020 after Tamara Verlinde, Hurd’s former mother-in-law, reported the allegations to authorities. Verlinde told WINK News she believes more victims may come forward, saying,

“I truly do believe there are more victims. It’s something that’s not going to stop.”

After years of reviewing evidence and interviewing witnesses, prosecutors filed formal charges in October 2025. A warrant for Hurd’s arrest was issued on October 15, and she was taken into custody on October 20, according to county jail records.

Hurd has been charged with one felony count of familial or custodial sexual battery, a crime punishable by life in prison if convicted.

Court Proceedings

During her preliminary court hearing on Wednesday, Krystal Hurd was ordered held without bond. Her defense attorney argued that she should be released, citing her lack of recent criminal history over the past five years. However, the court denied bond, citing the severity of the charges.

Prosecutors said the four victims — now adults — declined to appear in court out of fear of retaliation.

Hurd’s next court appearance is scheduled for November 24.
