Officer Lauren Craven of the La Mesa Police Department was “living her dream,” her father said, when tragedy struck late Monday night. The 25-year-old officer was hit and killed by an oncoming vehicle while helping victims at a crash scene along Interstate 8, near San Diego and Granville, California.
According to officials, Craven had stopped to assist after coming across an overturned vehicle just before 10:30 p.m. on the eastbound side of Interstate 8. While she was taking a report from one of the drivers involved, a third vehicle struck both Craven and the motorist, De’Veonte Morris, fatally injuring them at the scene. The impact triggered a chain reaction, damaging several vehicles and leaving four others injured. One person remained hospitalized the following afternoon, FOX 5 San Diego reported.
“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of La Mesa Police Officer Lauren Craven, who tragically lost her life while serving others,” the California Highway Patrol Border Communications Center said in a statement. “We stand with her family, friends, and fellow officers during this difficult time.”
Craven, originally from Bend, Oregon, had joined the La Mesa Police Department in February 2024 and was assigned to the Patrol Division. She had recently celebrated her birthday on October 7. On the night of the crash, she was driving back from the San Diego Central Jail when she encountered the multi-car collision about five miles west of La Mesa. Without hesitation, she radioed in the crash and stepped out to help. Moments later, she was struck — a devastating reminder of the dangers faced by officers who stop to assist on busy highways. The La Mesa Police Department paid tribute to Craven in a Facebook post, writing, “Officer Craven’s actions in her final moments exemplified her unwavering dedication to service and the safety of others — a reflection of how she lived every day. She was known for her tenacity, courage, and compassion — qualities that inspired her peers and strengthened her community.”
Craven’s father, David Craven, shared that his daughter’s decision to become a police officer came from a deeply personal experience. After being “traumatically assaulted in college,” she was shown compassion by a detective — an act that changed the course of her life. “Lauren thought so much of the difference between those two that she said right then and there, ‘I want to dedicate my life to being that good cop for anybody who needs me,’” her father told ABC10 San Diego. “I thought, ‘Damn, you just turned your biggest fear into a source of motivation. Nothing’s gonna stop you,’ and it didn’t.”
