The small town of Alvarado, Texas, is mourning the loss of 33-year-old high school teacher Chelsea Spillers, who was found dead in her home on Saturday, October 18, in what authorities are now calling a homicide.
Police believe Spillers died from blunt force trauma, and a murder warrant has been issued for her husband, Brandon Ashley, who was arrested two days later under bizarre circumstances more than 150 miles away.
According to the Alvarado Police Department, officers discovered Spillers’ body inside her residence while responding to a welfare check. At the time, her death was classified as “unexplained,” pending further investigation.
By Monday morning, Ashley had been taken into custody in Bedias, Texas, after the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office received multiple calls about a shirtless man trespassing on private property and knocking on neighbors’ doors asking for clothing.

Police confirmed Ashley was wanted in connection with his wife’s death and said he would be extradited back to Johnson County to face murder charges.
Spillers’ death has shaken the Alvarado community, where she was known as a beloved biology and chemistry teacher at Alvarado High School.
In a statement to the press, the Alvarado Independent School District described her as “a dedicated educator who loved her scholars and the Alvarado ISD team.”
Students and former pupils have since taken to social media and local news outlets to honor her memory. “She was the light of my day,” said student Ava Kelly, a junior at the school. “I could talk to her about anything, and she would always listen.”
Former student McKayla Norris told FOX 4 News, “Even though she’s gone, she lives on through all of the students she touched.”
Authorities say the investigation remains active as police work to establish a motive and timeline. Ashley is currently being held pending extradition, and no bond has been set.
