A tragic incident has claimed the life of Amy Morrell, 53, of Riverside, Rhode Island — a staff member at Meadowridge Academy in Swansea, Massachusetts — after being kicked in the chest by a 14-year-old student during an altercation at the residential therapeutic school.
Authorities say the assault occurred around 7 p.m. Wednesday evening as Morrell attempted to restrain the student who was trying to leave a dorm building without permission. Morrell reportedly collapsed moments after being struck. Staff members immediately began CPR and contacted emergency services.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to her injuries on Thursday afternoon, according to officials.
The teenage girl involved has been charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office confirmed. She was arraigned Thursday morning in Fall River Juvenile Court.
Meadowridge Academy — a residential school offering therapy and academic programs for youth with complex trauma histories and behavioral challenges — released a statement expressing deep sorrow over Morrell’s death:
“The Meadowridge Academy community is deeply saddened by the passing of direct care staff member, Amy Morrell. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Amy’s family during this difficult time. Support services and resources are available to assist students and staff as we grieve this tragic loss.”
Friends and loved ones have described Amy as compassionate, patient, and deeply dedicated to her work and family.
Family friend Andrew Ferruche said, “It’s a horrible accident… that child’s life is probably ruined. Her life is gone. It’s just a tragic situation.”
Another friend, Mel Lynch, remembered her as “the most patient, kindest person,” while Tina Lombardi wrote on Facebook, “I love you and can’t believe your life has been cut short. You will always be a big part of my life.”
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
