The 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent was shot dead by armed police after targeting worshippers at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue during Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
Attack Details
According to Greater Manchester Police, Al-Shamie rammed his car into pedestrians before stabbing at least one person outside the synagogue. Officers engaged within moments, fatally shooting him at the scene to prevent further casualties.
In a statement, Greater Manchester Police said:
“We believe the person responsible for today’s attack is 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie, a British citizen of Syrian descent. Armed officers acted swiftly to neutralize the threat and protect members of the community.”
Authorities confirmed that three additional suspects — two men in their 30s and a woman in her 60s — have been arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation, and instigation of acts of terrorism.

“I recognised him from the pictures. He was quiet, lived alone, and often walked around in his pyjamas and sandals. I never imagined he could do something like this.”
