Authorities have not yet revealed a clear motive for the killings, but they believe the crime may have involved a violent dispute. The Monroe Police Department credited the swift resolution of the case to a combination of diligent detective work and vital tips from local residents, who helped identify Payton as the prime suspect within hours of the incident.

Monroe's Mayor Friday Ellis expressed his sorrow, calling the murder of the young child especially heart-wrenching. "A two-year-old baby—innocent, defenseless, and full of promise—was killed along with two adult males in a violent home invasion. This is not just a tragedy; it is a moral wake-up call," Ellis said, promising that justice would be pursued.
