16-Year-Old Student Jumps to Death from Fifth Floor at Regis High School in Manhattan

A 16-year-old student has died after jumping from a fifth-floor window at Regis High School, a private, tuition-free Jesuit Catholic school on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. The incident occurred Thursday morning around 9:30 a.m., just as the student was reportedly waiting to meet with an administrator regarding a disciplinary matter.

According to police and sources, the student had been outside an office on the first floor before walking to the fifth floor and jumping. He was found outside the building with injuries consistent with a fall from a significant height and rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead around 11:45 a.m.

The teen’s identity has not been released. School authorities have not disclosed the reason for the meeting with the headmaster or whether concerns about the meeting played a role in the tragedy.

Regis High School, located at 55 East 84th Street, is a prestigious, tuition-free all-boys’ school known for rigorous academics, strong Jesuit values, and a diverse student body—52% of whom are sons of immigrants. The school serves 540 students across grades 9–12 and employs three Jesuit priests and 56 lay faculty members.

The tragedy has rocked the school community and raised broader concerns about student mental health and pressures faced by teens. New York City councilmember–elect Virginia Maloney described the incident as “every parent’s worst fear,” calling for expanded mental health resources, counselors, and support systems in schools.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
