17-Year-Old Nesconset Teen to Be Charged as Adult After Fatally Shooting Ex-Girlfriend Emily Finn

A 17-year-old Nesconset, NY teen who fatally shot his ex-girlfriend, 18-year-old Emily Finn of West Sayville, will be charged as an adult, according to Suffolk County authorities.

Police say the teenage suspect, who lived with his parents on Shenandoah Boulevard, has not been publicly named due to his age. Finn had gone to the home to return some of his belongings following their recent breakup.

“She wanted to speak to him face to face,” Suffolk County Police Det. Kevin Beyrer said at a press conference, according to Greater Long Island. “They had broken up a couple weeks ago. From what we’re hearing, he took the breakup very hard.”

Investigators say the suspect shot Finn with a shotgun, then turned the weapon on himself, shooting himself in the face. He survived the self-inflicted injury and was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital. His current condition has not been released.

The suspect’s parents were home at the time but were working in the backyard. His father called 911 after hearing the gunshot.

Police confirmed the shotgun used in the shooting was legally owned, though they have not said who in the household owned it. Officials added that there was no prior domestic history between the teens.

About Emily Finn

Finn graduated from Sayville High School in June and was a freshman at SUNY Oneonta, studying Childhood/Elementary Education with a minor in Dance. She had previously graduated from Cherry Avenue School in 2024.

At the time of the incident, she had gone to her ex-boyfriend’s home simply to return personal items.

The 17-year-old suspect is set to turn 18 in the coming days, Newsday reported. He will be charged as an adult with second-degree murder and arraigned when medically practical.

A GoFundMe page has been created to support the Finn family during this difficult time.
