4 Dead, 10 Hospitalized After Targeted Mass Shooting at Stockton Banquet Hall; Suspect Still at Large

Four people were killed and 10 others hospitalized after a mass shooting during a family gathering in San Joaquin County on Saturday evening. Investigators believe the attack was targeted, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s spokesperson Heather Brent reported that the shooting occurred just before 6 p.m. at a banquet hall in the 1900 block of Lucile Avenue in Stockton, where a family event — described by Vice Mayor Jason Lee as a birthday party — was underway. Victims ranged in age from children to adults.

The suspect fled the scene and remains at large. Multiple agencies — including the Stockton Police Department, Manteca Police Department, and the FBI — are assisting with the investigation.

Officials Condemn ‘Horrific’ Violence

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office released a statement calling the mass shooting “horrific,” joining a growing number of officials expressing grief and outrage.

Stockton Vice Mayor Jason Lee said he was devastated by the violence in his community.
“Tonight, my heart is heavy in a way that’s hard to put into words,” he said. “As someone who grew up in Stockton, I am devastated.”

San Joaquin County District Attorney Ron Freitas called the tragedy “unthinkable,” emphasizing the heartbreak of losing both adults and children. He urged the shooter to surrender immediately.

Community Reeling During Holiday Weekend

Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi noted the shooting occurred during Thanksgiving weekend — a time when families reunite, not mourn.
“Heaven is a little bigger tonight with the individuals, children and adults, who unfortunately did not make it,” she said. “Stockton is better than this.”

Fugazi confirmed that the Sheriff’s Office will lead the investigation since the shooting took place in their jurisdiction. She encouraged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at (209) 946-0600.

“Families should be together instead of at the hospital standing next to their loved one, praying that they survived,” the mayor added.

Gunfire May Have Come From Multiple Directions, Witnesses Say

Residents near the banquet hall told KCRA’s Peyton Headlee that the gunfire sounded like it came from multiple locations, though investigators have not yet confirmed this detail.

When reporters first arrived, a large group of people stood near officers, though it was unclear whether they were witnesses or attendees of the party.

KCRA 3’s Denzen Cortez reported that officers temporarily stopped drivers on the west side of Lucile Avenue to question motorists and gather possible leads on the suspect.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
