Tragedy struck in Kendall County, Florida, on Friday afternoon when Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Deputy Devin Jaramillo, 27, was fatally shot while responding to a car crash. Authorities say the gunman later took his own life following the deadly encounter.
During a press conference, Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz described Jaramillo’s death as a devastating loss for both the department and the community.
“He’s not only a deputy, he’s a son, he’s a brother, and he is a friend,” Cordero-Stutz said. “He gave the ultimate sacrifice — his life — defending us. What happened to our deputy is not okay. It’s unacceptable.”
The Fatal Encounter
The incident unfolded just before 4 p.m. near the 12200 block of Southwest 128th Street, where Deputy Jaramillo had been dispatched to the scene of a vehicle crash. According to investigators, an altercation broke out between Jaramillo and one of the individuals involved in the accident.
During the struggle, the suspect shot the deputy, then returned to a green Ford Mustang and fatally shot himself, NBC 6 reported. Bystanders called 911 as fellow deputies rushed to render aid before transporting Jaramillo to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Sources told WPLG that the gunman may have been the subject of a previous domestic violence call to which Jaramillo had responded in the Kendall District. Investigators are also examining whether the deputy was shot with his own weapon during the altercation.Another person at the crash scene was questioned but is not considered a suspect, authorities confirmed.
Law Enforcement Response and Community Mourning
The scene drew a massive law enforcement presence, including officers from Coral Gables Police, Florida Highway Patrol, and FBI agents. Videos shared online showed heavily armed officers surrounding the area as several nearby roads were closed.
By evening, dozens of officers gathered outside HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, forming a solemn procession to honor the fallen deputy.
A Dedicated Officer and Son of a Detective
Deputy Devin Jaramillo earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and corrections from the University of Central Florida and previously interned with the FBI. Before joining the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, he served nearly four years with the Coral Gables Police Department, where he received the Officer of the Month Award in July 2023 for solving multiple theft cases.
He followed in the footsteps of his father, David Jaramillo, a retired Miami-Dade Police detective and former president of the Hispanic Police Officers Association.
Sheriff Cordero-Stutz said the department and the community are united in grief. “He was one of our best,” she said. “We will never forget his bravery or his sacrifice.”
