A 6-year-old boy has died after being struck by a school bus Wednesday afternoon in southwest Oklahoma City, authorities confirmed.
The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. near Southwest 51st Street and South Douglas Avenue. According to the Oklahoma City Police Department, the child was attempting to cross the street after getting off the bus when he ran in front of the vehicle as it began turning south onto Douglas Avenue. He was hit and critically injured.
Emergency crews transported the boy to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Police have blocked off the surrounding area as investigators work to determine fault in the ongoing investigation.
In a statement, Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) said they are devastated by the tragedy.
“We are heartbroken to share that a Fillmore first-grade student was struck by an OKCPS school bus a short distance from the school shortly after dismissal today. Despite the efforts of first responders and medical personnel, the student has passed away,” the district wrote.
“Our thoughts are with the student’s family, loved ones, the first responders and our entire Fillmore community as we grieve this tremendous loss. Beginning tomorrow, we will have dedicated counselors and additional support staff on site to support our students and staff who may need assistance.”
OKCPS also said they are cooperating fully with police as the investigation continues.
According to police, three children had stepped off the bus moments before the collision. As the bus began its turn, the victim ran in front of the vehicle and was struck.
School officials confirmed to KOCO that the bus involved belongs to the district and extended their “thoughts and prayers” to the grieving family.
Authorities say this remains a developing investigation.
