Alexandra Wynter, Chico State Student, Killed in Domestic Violence Murder-Suicide Involving Anthony Lopez, California Authorities Say

Chico State University is mourning the death of Alexandra Wynter, a biological sciences major who was killed in what authorities describe as a domestic violence–related murder-suicide. California officials confirmed that Wynter died at the hands of Anthony Lopez, who died by suicide following the attack.

In a message to the campus community, Chico State President Steve Perez announced Wynter’s passing, emphasizing that Chico Police believe the case is a tragic incident of domestic violence.

A Dedicated Student and Beloved Member of the Chico Community

Wynter began her studies at Chico State in 2016 and was preparing to graduate this spring. Throughout her time at the university, she built an extensive record of service and involvement. She worked at Enloe Health, served as Community Connections Director for Community Action Volunteers in Education (CAVE), volunteered widely throughout Chico, and was an active member of the Black Student Union.

Faculty, colleagues, and community members are remembering her as a committed, compassionate, and accomplished young woman.

“She was a brilliant and driven student. When I saw her in class and looked in her direction, I always saw an interested and friendly face,” said Professor Nicole Kilian, who taught Wynter in her Hematology course this semester.

Chico Councilmember Addison Winslow shared photos and memories of working with Wynter during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In 2020, Alex and I were co-coordinators of a pandemic response mutual aid effort,” Winslow said. “Alex was intelligent, well-organized, and had a warmth and kindness that made her an ideal street outreach worker. We worked with dozens of volunteers and built trusting relationships to connect services to hundreds of unhoused people.”

University Emphasizes Support and Domestic Violence Resources

In his statement, President Perez urged students and community members to take advantage of the domestic violence support services available both on and off campus, noting the far-reaching impact tragedies like this have on the university community.

Chico State continues to offer counseling, advocacy, and crisis resources for anyone affected by the loss.
