Body Found in Search for Missing San Antonio Teen Camila Mendoza Olmos, Sheriff Says

Authorities searching for missing 19-year-old Camila Mendoza Olmos have found a body in Bexar County, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. Officials said the remains are believed to be hers, though positive identification and cause of death are still pending.

Sheriff Javier Salazar said the body was discovered Tuesday afternoon in a field located very close to Mendoza Olmos’ home. The discovery was made during a renewed search by sheriff’s deputies and FBI agents who revisited the area due to dense brush.

“This is not the outcome anyone was hoping for,” Salazar said, adding that foul play is not suspected at this time.

A firearm was also found near the body. Salazar noted that authorities had been searching for a missing firearm belonging to a family member. Officials emphasized that it is still too early to draw conclusions until the medical examiner completes the autopsy and confirms the identity.

Mendoza Olmos was last seen Christmas Eve, when investigators believe she left her home for a morning walk. Dashboard camera footage released earlier may show her walking near her residence shortly before she disappeared.

The remains were found roughly a quarter mile from the search staging area and about 100 yards from her home, according to the sheriff. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office is working to confirm the identity and determine the cause and manner of death. Results are expected in the coming days.

Sheriff Salazar previously stated that Mendoza Olmos may have been experiencing mental health challenges prior to her disappearance, though investigators stressed that all possibilities are still being considered.

Family members have expressed heartbreak as the search unfolded. “It’s been very heartbreaking,” said her cousin, Priscilla Flores. “It’s just unbelievable, especially this time of year.”

Mendoza Olmos grew up in Southern California and maintained close ties with family there.

The investigation remains ongoing.
