Granite City, Illinois — Authorities have arrested the 26-year-old man accused of shooting a Granite City police officer on Friday afternoon, ending an intense overnight manhunt that involved multiple local, state, and federal agencies.
Police confirmed that the suspect was taken into custody at approximately 3:15 a.m. Saturday and transported to the Madison County Jail. Law enforcement has not yet disclosed the location of the arrest, and the suspect’s name is being withheld pending formal charges.
Officer Shot Multiple Times but Expected to Recover
The shooting occurred around 2 p.m. Friday in the 2000 block of Johnson Road after officers responded to a call about an unwanted person.
According to Police Chief Gary Brooks, officers had barely arrived when the suspect opened fire, striking one officer multiple times.
The wounded officer was rushed to Saint Louis University Hospital, where officials said he was awake, speaking, and expected to make a full recovery.
The shooting scene—near Johnson Road and Carlson Avenue—prompted a temporary lockdown at Frohardt Elementary School, located less than half a mile away.
