Polk County Sheriff’s Office Mourns Death of Deputy Terra McKinnon

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of Deputy Sheriff Terra McKinnon, a nearly 20-year veteran who died following a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. She was 45 years old.

According to the sheriff’s office, McKinnon succumbed to an illness that attacked while her immune system was compromised. Her passing has left a profound void within the department and the community she devoted her life to serving.

McKinnon began her law enforcement career in 2006, making a steadfast commitment to protect and serve the residents of Polk County. Over the years, she became a respected street training instructor, shaping the next generation of deputies through her leadership, professionalism, and heart for service.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd announced her passing with deep sadness, describing McKinnon as a “beautiful soul” with an infectious smile and unwavering dedication to public service. “Her loss is heartbreaking,” he said, noting the tremendous impact she had on her colleagues and community.

In addition to her work as a training instructor, McKinnon served in community-oriented policing and spent her final years assigned to the Dundee Sheriff’s Station, where she was admired for her compassion and connection to the public.
