Nick Reiner, the son of legendary filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the couple were found dead inside their Brentwood, Los Angeles home, authorities confirmed Monday.

Parents Found Stabbed Inside Home

A source close to the family told NBC News that Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner appeared to have suffered stab wounds, though officials have not released further details about the cause of death. The investigation remains ongoing, and it is not yet known whether Nick Reiner has legal representation.

The deaths have sent shockwaves through Hollywood, where Rob Reiner is widely regarded as one of the most influential actors and directors of his generation. His career spans decades, with iconic films in the 1980s and 1990s that cemented his legacy in American cinema.

Nick Reiner’s History With Addiction

Nick Reiner, 32, has previously spoken publicly about his long struggle with drug addiction, which began during his teenage years. In a 2016 interview with People, he said he had spent time living on the streets and cycling in and out of rehabilitation programs after developing substance abuse issues at age 15.

Those personal experiences later became the inspiration for the 2016 film “Being Charlie,” directed by Rob Reiner and co-written by Nick Reiner. The film stars Cary Elwes — known for his role in The Princess Bride — and centers on a young man battling addiction and repeated stays in rehab.

Family Reflections on Past Struggles

Speaking to People at the time of the film’s release, Nick Reiner described attempting to rebuild his life and reconnect with his family. Rob Reiner later reflected on the emotional toll of those years in a 2015 interview with the Los Angeles Times.

“It was very, very hard going through it the first time, with these painful and difficult highs and lows,” Rob Reiner said. “And then making the movie dredged it all up again.”

Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner also acknowledged that the film was shaped by their real-life frustrations with addiction treatment programs and their struggle to effectively help their son during his recovery.

The investigation into the deaths of Rob and Michele Reiner remains active, and police have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the case.
