A stolen aircraft crashed into a building at Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles early Tuesday morning after a suspect broke into a flight school and attempted to flee in the plane, according to authorities.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m., when a thief unlawfully entered a flight school at the airport and stole a single-engine Cessna. The aircraft was later found crashed nose-first into an airport building, leaving a large hole in the structure.
Suspect Arrested, No Injuries Reported
One person has been arrested on suspicion of burglary and theft of an aircraft, according to NBC4. Authorities confirmed that the plane never became airborne, and no injuries were reported.
It remains unclear whether investigators are searching for additional suspects connected to the incident.
Aircraft Owner Speaks Out
Anthony Nercessian, owner of LA Flight Academy, told NBC4 that the stolen aircraft belonged to his school and was valued at approximately $450,000.
“I got a phone call at 5 a.m. that someone broke into the flight school and stole one of the planes,” Nercessian said.
He added that the aircraft’s engine is no longer operational following the crash but expressed relief that the incident did not result in injuries.“I’m glad it ended this way with no casualties,” Nercessian said. “I just can’t understand how someone would think of stealing an airplane.”
Busy Airport, Ongoing Investigation
Van Nuys Airport is considered one of the busiest general aviation airports in the United States, serving private aircraft, air-taxi services, commercial operations, and multiple flight schools.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the airport’s heavy traffic and mixed-use operations make it a particularly challenging environment.
Authorities continue to investigate how the suspect gained access to the aircraft and whether additional security measures may be considered.
