A Pennsylvania man has been arrested and charged with hundreds of crimes after authorities say he stole human remains from cemeteries and attempted to sell them on social media, including Instagram.
Jonathan Gerlach, 34, was taken into custody on January 6 at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Yeadon, according to law enforcement officials. Police say Gerlach was observed leaving the cemetery carrying a burlap bag and tools, including a crowbar, and was found in possession of stolen human remains.
Investigators allege that Gerlach later admitted to stealing approximately 30 sets of human remains from graves and mausoleums across multiple locations in Pennsylvania.
Following his arrest, authorities executed search warrants at Gerlach’s home and a storage unit connected to him. Prosecutors said those searches uncovered more than 100 full or partial human skeletal remains, describing the discovery as deeply disturbing.
