Matthew Traywick Shot and Killed by Tyler Edward Linn During Parking Spot Dispute at Abercorn Target in Savannah, Georgia

Authorities have identified the victim and suspect in a fatal shooting that occurred Sunday afternoon in the parking lot of a Target store on Abercorn Street, stemming from an argument over a parking space.

Savannah police confirmed that Tyler Edward Linn, 30, was arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault in connection with the shooting. Jail records from Chatham County list Linn as being taken into custody shortly after the incident.

The victim was identified as Matthew Traywick, a husband and father, whose death has prompted an outpouring of grief from family, friends, and his former employer.

Incident Details

Police responded to reports of a shooting at the Abercorn Target parking lot at approximately 4:10 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found Traywick suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Authorities stated that Linn remained at the scene following the shooting and was detained by responding officers.

Savannah District 6 Alderman Kurtis Purtee confirmed that the confrontation escalated from a disagreement over parking.

“The shooting occurred as a result of an argument over a parking spot,” Purtee said.

Community and City Response

Savannah Mayor Van Johnson addressed the tragedy, emphasizing the senseless nature of the violence.

“No disagreement over a parking space, or anything else, should ever end in the loss of life,” Johnson said. “This needless, unnecessary violence underscores the daily pain felt by families across our city and the urgency of our collective work to reduce gun violence and strengthen community safety.”

Remembering Matthew Traywick

Traywick’s former employer, Vaden Automotive, released a statement mourning his death and honoring his legacy.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of Matthew Traywick,” the company wrote. “Matthew was a valued member of the Vaden family for years. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, children, and those closest to him during this incredibly difficult time.”

Traywick’s family has also launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover expenses and support his loved ones during their time of bereavement.

Background on the Suspect

An official with the 3rd Infantry Division confirmed that Linn previously served in the U.S. Army from August 2015 to October 2023. He was stationed at Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, serving as an unmanned aircraft systems repairer, and left the military with the rank of specialist.
