A Mother, Sarah Brock Shares Final Snapchat as Search for Trenton Massey Suspended After Disappearance Near Lake Superior in Marquette

A Michigan mother is facing every parent’s worst fear after her 21-year-old son, Trenton Massey, vanished in the early hours of Feb. 22 following a night out near the downtown area.

Massey, a student at Northern Michigan University, was last seen on surveillance cameras walking unsteadily along a city multiuse path near UPHS‑Marquette at about 2:50 a.m., according to an official update from the Marquette Police Department. Footage later showed him heading toward Founder’s Landing Boardwalk, where at approximately 3:35 a.m. he was seen walking onto the ice from the north pier before disappearing from view. Authorities say this is the last confirmed sighting of him.

Earlier that morning, a cellphone later identified as belonging to Massey had been turned in to police after being found on a nearby path between the hospital and a McDonald’s location. Family members were notified, but hours later they reported he was missing.

Before his disappearance, Massey had been texting his mother. In their final exchange, she reminded him to be careful and teased him about spending money. He reassured her, said he loved her, and sent a selfie from the bar — something she says he often did.

Search operations began shortly after he was reported missing and continued for several days across land, ice, water, and surrounding neighborhoods. Responders used drones, sonar, dive teams, K-9 units, helicopters, and marine equipment while combing areas including Mattson Lower Harbor Park and shoreline sections west of Front Street. Assisting agencies included the Michigan State Police, US Coast Guard Station Marquette, and Michigan Department of Natural Resources, along with local emergency services and volunteers.

Despite extensive efforts, authorities announced that as of 4:00 p.m. on Feb. 25, Massey had not been located and official search operations have been suspended pending new information. Volunteer searches may continue, though officials urged the public to stay off the ice and respect private property.

Meanwhile, Brock has remained in Marquette, vowing not to leave until her son is found. Community members have organized vigils and fundraising efforts to support the family as they continue to wait for answers.
