Authorities say Robert Dorgan, 56, has been identified as the shooter who opened fire during a high-school hockey game at Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, killing two people — including his ex-wife, Rhonda Dorgan, and an adult daughter — before taking his own life. Three other victims remain hospitalized in critical condition.
Police Chief Tina Goncalves confirmed investigators believe the attack was targeted and stemmed from a domestic dispute. Officers arrived within minutes of the first 911 call reporting gunfire in the stands shortly before 2:30 p.m.
Officials said the suspect, who also used the name “Roberta Esposito” online, was the parent of a player participating in a tournament involving North Providence High School. Witnesses reported that a bystander briefly intervened and wrestled one firearm away before the shooter allegedly produced a second weapon and continued firing. Police recovered two guns at the scene.
Court records indicate Dorgan underwent gender-affirming surgery around 2020. Divorce filings from that period show his spouse initially cited the procedure and alleged personality concerns before later amending the grounds to irreconcilable differences. Separate records show Dorgan previously reported a conflict with his father-in-law to police, alleging threats during a dispute over living arrangements.Investigators also reviewed social-media posts attributed to Dorgan, including one written the night before the shooting that warned critics not to be surprised if transgender people “go berserk.” Other posts reportedly referenced political figures such as Donald Trump, Thomas Massie, and Marjorie Taylor Greene, as well as media personality Alex Jones. Authorities have not stated that political views played any role in the attack.
The investigation is being assisted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien said the city is working with the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office to ensure all facts are confirmed.
Authorities have not released a full timeline or final motive and say the investigation remains ongoing.
