A tragic incident unfolded near the Las Vegas Strip when Tawnia McGeehan, a mother from West Jordan, Utah, and her pre-teen daughter, Addi Smith, were found dead in a hotel room in what authorities say was an apparent murder-suicide.
Las Vegas Metro Police responded to a welfare check on Sunday around 10:45 a.m. at the Rio Hotel and Casino, following concern from family, friends, and the Utah Xtreme Cheer organization, where the mother and daughter were members. The pair had last been seen alive on Saturday evening at the New York New York Hotel and Casino, traveling to Las Vegas for a cheer competition.
Hotel security initially checked the room after police cleared the call but received repeated inquiries from loved ones. Around 2:30 p.m., security entered the room and discovered the mother and daughter deceased. Preliminary investigation suggests that McGeehan shot her daughter before taking her own life, Lt. Robert Price of the LVMPD confirmed. Authorities also noted a note was left at the scene.
“This is a sad and tragic incident and our hearts go out to the family,” Lt. Price said at a press briefing Sunday. McGeehan was reported to be in her mid-30s, and her daughter was a pre-teen.Utah Xtreme Cheer posted on social media Sunday night confirming Addi Smith’s death, honoring her memory and acknowledging the loss to the cheer community.
The investigation remains ongoing, and Metro police are working with family and local authorities to notify next of kin and gather further details.
