A former New Jersey middle school teacher is facing multiple serious charges after authorities say she engaged in a sexual relationship with a student she taught.
Ashley Fisler, 36, of Washington Township in Gloucester County, was arrested Thursday and charged with six counts of first-degree sexual assault of a minor, one count of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, and one count of second-degree official misconduct, according to reports.
The allegations stem from an investigation launched earlier this year after the alleged victim—now a young adult—came forward to police in January.
According to investigators, the incidents date back to 2021, when the victim was a student in Fisler’s class at Orchard Valley Middle School. Authorities allege that the former social studies teacher engaged in multiple sexual encounters with the student during that time.
The alleged incidents reportedly took place in Fisler’s vehicle and inside her classroom, according to investigators. Law enforcement officials also say they uncovered text messages between Fisler and the student that allegedly support claims of an inappropriate and sexual relationship.
Each first-degree sexual assault charge carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, while the second-degree charges carry a maximum penalty of up to 10 years.
Fisler worked as a social studies teacher in the Washington Township School District from 2014 until June 2023, according to available records. Officials confirmed she is no longer employed by the district or working in any other school system.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not released additional details at this time.
