A Louisville, Kentucky woman has been tragically killed after a freak accident during the city's St. Patrick's Day parade. Joan Panutti Pottinger, 50, a married mother of two, was struck by a vehicle after her foot became caught underneath a float, causing her to fall and be hit.

The Tragic Accident

The incident occurred on Saturday, March 14, 2026, around Bardstown Road and Grinstead Drive during the parade. Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) responded to reports of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.

According to police, Panutti Pottinger, who was walking alongside one of the floats, had her foot unexpectedly caught by the float, causing her to fall underneath the vehicle. The driver, unaware of the incident, continued until the vehicle was stopped by others. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and worked to stabilize her before she was taken to University of Louisville Hospital, where she later passed away from her injuries.

Identified Victim and Family Impact

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office confirmed the identity of the victim as Joan Panutti, a 50-year-old Louisville resident. She leaves behind her husband and two children, ages 9 and 13.

David Gnamba, who was manning his family’s food truck at the parade, shared his shock after seeing the commotion unfold. "I saw EMS attending to somebody, not thinking it was something very serious," he said, but was devastated to later learn of the fatal outcome. "It breaks my heart. This is not news that we want to hear as human beings, as vendors, as people, as partygoers," he added.

Community Outpouring of Support

The Hibernian Cultural and Charitable Association, which organized the parade, expressed their sorrow in a statement. "We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident at this year’s parade. Our hearts and prayers are with the family and all impacted by the incident," the association said.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg also offered condolences to the family, writing in a post on X (formerly Twitter), “I am so sorry to hear about the tragic accident that took a woman’s life at today’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Please join Rachel and me in keeping her family and friends in your prayers. May her memory be a blessing.”

Investigation and Fundraiser

The LMPD Traffic Unit is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident. As the family mourns their loss, parade organizers have set up a GoFundMe campaign to help support Panutti’s family during this devastating time.

Suzanne Pottinger Arrow, Panutti’s sister-in-law, shared the campaign on social media, stating, “Joan leaves behind a loving husband and two children, ages 9 and 13. Please help support them as they navigate through this unimaginable tragedy.”

As the community rallies around the grieving family, Joan Panutti Pottinger’s untimely death serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of life and the unexpected dangers that can arise even during moments of celebration.
