Two people were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide early Wednesday morning at an apartment in Verona, Mississippi, according to police.
Officers with the Verona Police Department responded around 1:08 a.m. on March 25 to reports of a domestic disturbance and possible gunfire in the 100 block of Clement Circle. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered two individuals inside the apartment suffering from gunshot wounds.
Lee County Coroner Carolyn Green identified the victims as 32-year-old Makayla Gates and 28-year-old Markel Weeks. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to investigators, Gates had sustained two gunshot wounds. Weeks was found with what authorities described as two self-inflicted gunshot wounds. A firearm was recovered from inside the residence.Police said the incident appears to have stemmed from a domestic situation and is being investigated as a murder-suicide. Officials emphasized that the case is believed to be isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
