A deadly early-morning shooting outside a Winston-Salem sports bar has left a 34-year-old father dead, sparking outrage in the community and raising serious questions about security practices and alleged connections between the shooter and the bar’s ownership.
According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, officers responded around 4:18 a.m. Sunday to reports of gunfire in the 2800 block of Indiana Avenue, outside Quiet Corner Sports Bar, located at 2805 Indiana Avenue.
When officers arrived, they found Calvin Samuel Johnson, 34, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Allegations Surround Security and Ownership Ties
In the aftermath of the shooting, controversy has grown over claims regarding who was responsible for security at the venue.
Sources cited by local reports allege that the suspected shooter may have been working as security and could be related to the bar’s owner, Edward Fulks. While authorities have not publicly confirmed these claims, the allegations have fueled frustration and concern among residents.
Many in the community are now questioning how security was handled and whether proper measures were in place to prevent violence.
Owner’s Apology Sparks Backlash
Following the incident, Fulks issued a public apology on social media, expressing condolences to the victim’s family.
“My heart is heavy as I write this. I want to express my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones… This is something I never wanted to happen, and I am truly sorry for the pain and loss you are experiencing,” he wrote.
He also urged the public to be cautious of “false narratives and misinformation,” encouraging people to seek truth and promote unity.
However, the response from the community has been largely critical. Many residents say the statement did not adequately address their concerns, particularly regarding the reported security issues and alleged connections involved.
Community Demands Accountability
The shooting has ignited broader conversations in Winston-Salem about safety at nightlife venues and accountability when violence occurs.
Some community members have openly criticized what they describe as inadequate or “janky” security, while others are calling for a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Unconfirmed Claims and Social Media Reaction
Amid the growing online discussion, unverified reports have circulated about a possible suspect, including claims involving an individual named Brittany Grace. As of now, law enforcement has not confirmed the identity of any suspect or made public statements supporting those claims.
Authorities have not released additional details about arrests or charges, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Investigation Ongoing
The Winston-Salem Police Department continues to investigate the fatal shooting and is expected to provide updates as more information becomes available.
As the case unfolds, the focus remains on determining exactly what happened in the early morning hours that led to the death of Calvin Samuel Johnson—and whether any failures contributed to the tragedy.
