A prominent Auburn business owner and beloved community member, Jennifer Merwin Cooper, was killed in a car crash involving a school bus, according to Alabama authorities.
The fatal wreck occurred just after 8 a.m. on Tuesday, November 18, in the 1000 block of East University Drive at Alfa Court in Auburn, Alabama.
Cooper, 42, was pronounced dead at the scene, Lee County Coroner Daniel Sexton confirmed. Officials have not yet released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the crash.
The Auburn Police Department stated that no other injuries were reported. Officers with the Traffic Homicide Unit responded to the scene and have since launched an active investigation into the incident.
Jennifer Merwin Cooper was widely known as the owner of GiGi’s Cupcakes locations in Opelika, Alabama, and Columbus, Georgia. In addition to her work as a business owner, she was a mother of two and a former science teacher.
According to a previous profile published in the Opelika Observer, Cooper had been serving the community through her business for more than 15 years. She and her husband were also dedicated to giving back, including donating birthday cakes to children in foster care since 2018.
The couple also partnered with United Way and local schools on fundraising initiatives, further contributing to the Auburn-area community.
Authorities have not yet said what caused the crash or whether any contributing factors or liability have been determined.
