A North Carolina man, Jonathan Maurice Pigford, recorded disturbing video he says shows his elderly neighbor, Brett, being abused by his caregiver, Deborah Porter, in Wilmington, prompting an investigation by authorities.
The incident reportedly took place near a home on Ern Way, where Pigford said he found the elderly man outside in chilly weather wearing only a T-shirt and a heavily soiled adult diaper. The man appeared disoriented and vulnerable as he walked along the street.
Pigford helped the man and attempted to return him home, but says he was confronted by the caregiver, identified as Deborah Porter, who allegedly instructed him to turn the elderly man around and force him to walk back down the street as a form of “punishment.” When questioned, she reportedly claimed she was trying to “teach him a lesson.”
The situation quickly escalated, with Pigford challenging the woman’s actions and accusing her of mistreating the elderly man. He later said his main concern was the man’s safety and well-being.
“At the end of the day, I just want him to be safe and have his last days be glorious,” Pigford said in a follow-up video after the encounter.
Pigford also claimed the incident may not have been isolated, alleging that another neighbor had previously witnessed the elderly man being washed with a garden hose in the backyard.
After the videos were shared on social media and gained attention, Pigford said Social Services contacted him regarding the situation. He expressed hope that authorities would intervene to ensure the man receives proper care, possibly relocating him or improving his living conditions.
Investigations have since been opened into the treatment of the elderly man as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.
