The Bourbonnais community is mourning the tragic loss of 26-year-old Melissa Prosser, who was killed in an early morning crash on Interstate 55 in Will County.

According to authorities, the fatal collision occurred around 3:15 a.m. Sunday in the southbound lanes of I-55 near mile marker 246, close to Channahon.

Melissa Prosser, 26, of Bourbonnais, was transported to Ascension St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet following the crash, where she was pronounced dead at approximately 4:14 a.m., the Will County Coroner’s Office confirmed.

Illinois State Police said troopers responded to a two-vehicle collision involving Prosser’s vehicle and another driver. Emergency crews arriving at the scene found both vehicles with significant damage, indicating a severe impact.

The driver of the second vehicle sustained injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. Their condition has not been released.

Due to the масшavity of the crash and the ongoing investigation, all southbound lanes of Interstate 55 were shut down for several hours as authorities processed the scene and gathered evidence. Traffic was fully reopened around 8:40 a.m.

An autopsy was conducted Sunday morning. Officials said the final cause of death is pending additional police reports and toxicology results, according to Will County Coroner Laurie H. Summers.

Prosser worked as a dispatcher with the Western Will County Communications Center (WESCOM) 911, where colleagues remembered her as a compassionate and dedicated professional.

In a statement, WESCOM described her as “a wonderful person who displayed a passion for helping others,” while the City of Wilmington Police Department also extended condolences to her family and loved ones.

Friends and community members have begun sharing tributes, remembering Prosser as a vibrant young woman whose life was cut tragically short.

“Melissa’s passing leaves a profound hole in our hearts,” one tribute read. “She was a daughter of this region, and her light was taken far too soon.”

Illinois State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash, including factors such as road conditions and the sequence of events leading up to the collision.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has information to contact Illinois State Police District 5 or submit an anonymous tip through official channels.

As the investigation continues, officials are reminding drivers to remain alert and focused, particularly during early morning hours when visibility and reaction times may be reduced.
