A series of random, early-morning shootings across DeKalb County and Brookhaven, Georgia, has left two women dead and a man critically injured, with authorities arresting a suspect they say carried out the unprovoked attacks over several hours.
The suspect, Olaolukitan Adon Abel, 26, was taken into custody Monday afternoon in Troup County following what police described as a coordinated, multi-agency investigation.
Timeline of the Deadly Shooting Spree
According to investigators, the violence began just before 1 a.m. outside a Checkers restaurant on Wesley Chapel Road in DeKalb County.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire and found a woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was transported to a hospital but later died. Authorities have not yet publicly released her identity.
About an hour later, around 2 a.m., a second shooting occurred in Brookhaven at the Cherokee Plaza shopping center near a Kroger on Peachtree Road.
Police say a 49-year-old man, described as unhoused, was sleeping outside when he was shot multiple times from a passing vehicle. He was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital and remains in critical condition. Officials say the quick response by officers may improve his chances of survival.
Lauren Bullis Identified as Second Fatal Victim
The final and most shocking attack occurred around 6:50 a.m. in a residential neighborhood near Battle Forest Drive and Manassas Lane.
Authorities identified the victim as Lauren Bullis, 40, of Decatur, who was shot multiple times and stabbed while walking her dog. She died at the scene.
Neighbors described Bullis as kind and well-known in the area, often seen walking her dog daily.
Suspect Captured After Multi-County Search
Police say Abel used a rental vehicle—a silver Volkswagen Jetta—to carry out the attacks. License plate reader technology helped investigators track the vehicle, leading to his arrest during a traffic stop in Troup County.
He was taken into custody without incident.
Random Attacks Spark Alarm
Authorities emphasized that the victims appear to have been targeted at random and had no known connection to the suspect.
“This was a completely random attack,” Brookhaven Police Chief Brandon Gurley said, calling the pattern of violence “particularly alarming.”
Officials noted that the situation could have escalated further if the suspect had not been quickly identified and apprehended.
Charges Filed, More Expected
Abel is currently facing charges including:
- Murder
- Aggravated assault
- Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony
Additional charges are expected as the investigation into the two homicides continues.
Community Shaken as Investigation Continues
The shootings, spanning multiple jurisdictions including unincorporated DeKalb County and Brookhaven, have left residents shaken and searching for answers.
Authorities credited collaboration between agencies for the swift arrest and say the investigation remains ongoing as they work to fully piece together the suspect’s actions and motive.
